Current council

Orkney Islands council is made up of 18 independent councillors.

According to the 2020 Hands Up survey 29.2% of children in Orkney walked to school in 2020, 3.4% cycled and 1.1% scooted or skated. According to the 2021 Cycling Scotland annual monitoring report 6.5% of employees usually or regularly cycle to work and 13% of households have no access to a car. The council’s active travel budget for 2019/20 was £36,656 (capital) and £28,373 (revenue), which works out as a total of £2.92 per person. It adopted a Green Travel Plan in 2016.
